BóTown: Galway

After work yesterday we decided to head into town since it was sunny.

After a beer in the garden at Jury's Inn we wondered where to eat. Tuna was in the mood for a burger and I remembered that I had seen on Facebook that a new burger restaurant had opened. I checked it on the map and it was a three minute walk away so off we went.

We almost walked past it, it blends in well, as if it's been here a long time!

the menu is mainly burgers and fries. We went for The BóTown Burger which was served with beef dripping fries.

Our server told us that since they had just opened and were busier than expected the kitchen was running a bit behind. So we ordered beers to pass the time.

There was quite a wait for the food but once it came it didn't disappoint. It was a really good burger meal!

The decor is a big hipster but I'll definitely be back here for burgers!

Key West May 2018 - Final Words

The Duval Loop
The Duval Loop was great. We don't normally use taxis in Key West so it didn't save us money  - But it did save us a lot of time which we previously would have spent walking. It eliminated the need to rent bikes also. There were a few times where we chose to walk instead of getting the bus, but this was when we had a lot of time and we always got the bus home. Originally it was only meant to run on weekends during the Summer, luckily just before we arrived the timetable was scheduled to run 7 days a week. There were always a few other passengers on the bus with us, although it was never packed. I'd say during high season the buses will get much more full.

Best Margaritas

My Three Favourite Margaritas were:
1) Tipsy Rooster
2) Caroline's
3) Arrivals at the Aiport - Although this could just be because if was my first of the trip and I was so happy to be back on the island!!

Happy Hours

My three favourite happy hours (food and drinks) were:
1) Blue Macaw
2) Turtle Kraals
3) The Boathouse

Key West May 2018 - Part 3

Day 11: Tuesday 22nd May
At this point in the holiday I tried to relax a bit and spend more time by the pool or at the beach and less time 'doing things'.

Today after working on my tan for a bit I went to get a burrito in the new Sinz burrito. It was ok. The ordering process was a but complex and the guy taking my order wasn't really helpful at all. But the finished product was good, my burrito bowl came in a massive mixing bowl. I had a Bud light with my lunch and I sat at a bar looking out onto Truval Square which was nice.

In Sinz I noticed a poster for a ChihuaHua race! Running of the Chihuahuas! I made sure to note down the date and would definitely go check it out on the 26th.

For dinner Enid and I went to Taco Tuesdays at Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar. On taco Tuesdays the have $1 tacos and $2 tacitos. They were tasty but small. Our vodka diet cokes weren't discounted: But you can get $1 Coronas if you're in the mood for a beer instead.

Day 12: Wednesday 23rd May
I spent the morning by the pool and then got the bus to the airport to pick up Tuna from the airport at 4.10pm. The public bus in Key West is great value: $2 a ride. It doesn't come that often but it does always come on time so you just need to consult the timetable carefully before you go to the bus stop for it.

In the airport I spotted this cocktail challenge, I didn't get to do it, but I'd love to complete this challenge!

Tuna arrived on the same flight that I didn't, at 4.30pm. We got a taxi back to the house were out to Blue Macaw in time for happy hour! Afterwards we had a drink in Sloppy Joes (Enid, Mam and the aunts met us here for one also) . Funny story, my vodka diet coke was very strong, so I asked the barn mand could I have some more diet coke, it's very strong and he shouted "Of course it's strong, Welcome to Sloppy Joes!!!".
Tuna and I had a few rounds in Irish Kevin's also. Then it was time for home.

Day 13: Thursday 24th May
We were up early and went to The Breakfast Club, Too for brekkie. I wasn't impressed at all. It didn't have a Key West feel at all, and was quite expensive compared to other breakfast joints on the island. Probably won't be back.

Today it was overcast, but not raining. Tuna and I took two beach chairs to the Southernmost beach. I don't normally like the beach, but with the chairs actually, it was great! Definitely next time I'm back I'll be purchasing beach chairs if we don't have any  - Pack a cooler with some diet cokes and some beers and you're good to go!

After the beach we go the Duval Loop up to the bight for Alonzo's happy hour.

Tuna waiting for the Duval Loop

We ordered buffalo shrimp, conch fritters and calamari. With fries and veg on the side. Everything was lovely, although very deep dried!

Our waiter was a russian girl and she kept trying to get us to buy the oysters. Even though we stated numerous times that we don't like oysters! She said these were baked and tasted different. We didn't buy them, I hate oysters!

There was a guy at the bight filleting the fish when it came in from the boats. I was very proud of myself to be able to indentify the Mahi Mahi from the wheelbarrow :) Although I thought they were much bigger than this!

After dinner we went for drinks in Irish Kevins. I love the live link to Temple Bar!

We had coupons which I picked up at the airport for 2-4-1 drinks in Irish Kevins. It was supposed to be one per person per night, but the bartender let us keep using them for every round we ordered. We tipped a dollar a drink, and everyone who served us seemed really appreciative of this. I wonder do the usual patrons in Irish Kevins not top well? After we ran out of coupons the bartender kept giving us 2-4-1 drinks. At one point I came back from the bathroom while Tuna was in the smoking area and the bartender just handed me a drink as apparently we were due a free one?

Day 14: Friday 25th May
I'm not gonna lie. I was very hungover today. It rained all day anyway. Tuna went to the gym and I stayed in bed!
For dinner we went to Jack Flatts for a burger. We love this because we don't have these sports bar style pubs at home. So good to have a burger and a beer while watching the basketball. My burger was great, I ordered it rare. However, afterwards I realized that actually, burgers taste better when not rare. I always order my steak rare but I think from now on I'll order my burgers well done. It's a nicer texture, mince meat feels funny when it's not cooked fully.

Day 15: Saturday 26th May
I woke up to a weather warning: Storm Alberto, the first tropical storm of the season would be arriving in Key West. Of course it is. I checked online and the Running of the Chihuahuas had been postponed until June because of the weather.

We walked down to Schooner Wharf for breakfast. It was nice and calm, but the rain soon started to drizzle down.

By this point I was so annoyed at the bad weather that I sat out by the pool in the drizzle rain. Meh,

The result from the referendum (on whether to allow abortion or not) back home was then to be announced so I watched it live online. The result was a resounding Yes! What a great day for Ireland! Irish women no longer treated like second class citizens and can now access their healthcare in Ireland instead of being forced to travel abroad.

Liverpool were playing in the Champions League so we watched that in the house and had a few beers.
We then decided to hit Duval street. I was hungry so we went to Smokin' Tuna to have a bite. However, when we arrived they were closing up due to the storm. I asked the bartender and she said only bars with no outdoor areas would be open and she recommended going to the Sandbar and Grill, so we did!

I had the taco burger which was really tasty!
I ordered the burger to be cooked well done, as I had gotten it rare in Jack Flatts and it wasn't too good. The well done burger was much better.

After my burger I wasn't ready to go home and we passed the Tiki House which I had on my list of bars to try. So we went in and looked at the cocktail menu: I was a bit disappointed as I didn't like the sound of any of them. There were no vodka cocktails. They do come in seriously cute receptacles though!!

Storm Alberto was definitely coming in by this point. Everyone on the street was wearing ponchos so we decided to just head home.

Day 16: Sunday 27th May
The next morning we woke up to an actual nice morning! No sign of the storm, it seemed to have completely cleared! So I rang Bistro 245 to see if we could get in for brunch, we got a reservation for 12.30pm.

So in the meantime we headed to the Southernmost beach.

The water was too rough to get into though.

We headed back to get ready for Brunch and then got the Duval Loop up to Margaritaville. The brunch was lovely as usual and the weather was perfect.

Unfortunately the Minimal Regatta which we had planned to attend had also been postponed until June because of Storm Alberto. We were very unfortunate with the weather!

Day 17: Monday 28th May
We skipped breakfast and had lunch in Two Friends. It was fine. We both ordered burgers - They didn't come with fries, you have to order fries separately if you want them.

We had dinner in Caroline's. It was lovely. I had a really tasty, creamy pasta. And two margaritas. This is another margarita which made my top three list! It was so good! We will definitely be back to eat at Carolines, I can't believe I've never eaten there before actually.

Day 18: Tuesday 29th May

After a morning on the beach (overcast) we went for a walk down Duval Street in the evening. We went to Margaritaville so I could get a green drink from Jimmy's truck. Tuna got a pina colada from him also but he instantly regretted it as soon as he tasted my green drink! It's so good!

We walked by the Boathouse on our walk and happened to see their happy hour menu. It seemed similar to Alonzo's, except that there were a lot more non-fish options! i had actually read on TripAdvisor that this was one of the best happy hours on the island so we decided to come back here for food during happy hour.

The Boathouse Bread

This was definitely one our of nicest meals here, although some items came in tiny portions. The filet mignon kabops for example. The other items were big enough to share, the boathouse bread was amazing (drizzled in olive oil and spices) and Tuna really loved the calamari in particular.

Day 19: Wednesday 30th May
We got up early, packed and after saying our goodbyes, we got the bus to the airport.
We picked up our convertible Mustang and hit the road to Florida city!

We had been debating whether or not it would be worth it for us to still rent the convertible, considering how rain was forecast. But luckily for us actually the clouds parted, the sun came out and we were able to make our way to Miami with the top down!

I was supposed to be designated driver but unfortunately I had lost my license during this trip so Tuna got to drive instead of me :(

We stopped in Florida City to eat at Cracker Barrel and do some shopping at the outlets. Tuna bought a pair of Vans which he had had his eye on and other than that we just picked up some bits and pieces from Nike, Under Armour and Ralph Lauren. The Coach factory store here had a much larger selection than in Key West - Including a range which was all flamingo themed! It was definitely more expensive though, and I was glad I made my purchases on Duval Street instead of here.

After this we were on the road to Miami! We dropped the car at Miami airport and then got a taxi to Hotel La Flora in Miami Beach. Tuna and I had previously stayed at this hotel in 2014 and it suited us perfectly. It's small but cute and in a fun Art Deco building,

We went to eat in 11th Street Diner for dinner which basically looks like a food truck stuck onto a building. This place was recommended to us on TripAdvisor and it didn't disappoint. Tuna had the special Argentinean steak dish which was extra tasty.

After dinner we had a long island in the bar at the Waldorf hotel

At this point we were tired so we headed home to the hotel and went to bed.

Day 20: Thursday 31st May

We got up and went for breakfast in Big Pink. This was a fun diner-style restaurant. It was a bit of a walk, out of the usual 'happening' area of South Beach but there was a constant flow of tourists walking up and entering while we were there.

After breakfast we went straight to the beach. The beach in Miami is amazing! And, it wasn't raining!

At 6pm every night at the hotel bar we were given two free cocktails so we always stopped in for my margarita and Tuna had Long Islands.

We had dinner in a restaurant by the beach, I can't remember the name. But we had a nice meal and some beers with live music - It was very overpriced though. I think we paid well over $100 for two main course and a few beers each. Everywhere in Miami was like this though so we had budgeted according ling.

Day 21: Friday 1st June

This morning we went straight to the beach as we weren't hungry for breakfast. It was slightly overcast but the sun was peeking out every now and then.

We had paninis from a little shop for lunch on our way out to go shopping. We browsed the shops on Lincoln Road, but everything here was more expensive than Key West so we didn't buy anything.

I stopped in CVS to get Hershey's Kisses, Reece's Cup's and Sour Patch Kids to bring home for my work colleagues.

In the other direction we walked to Zara to see if they had anything nice in. I ended up buying a pair of jeans and a top here, it was about the same price as Dublin.

For dinner we went to Naked Taco for fajitas. These were really good!

Day 22: Saturday 2nd June

The day we're to leave, I wake up and see the first proper blue sky of the whole trip. Typical!

Our flight from Miami to New York was very delayed, we thought we wouldn't make our connecting flight. So we queued at the rebooking agent just in case. He said that he thought we would still make our flight but he would make a reservation for us a on a later (Aer Lingus) flight just in case.
When we landed in New York there was a woman at the gate with a clipboard shouting gate numbers at people. I asked "Dublin"? And straight away she said "Gate 9! That way! Go!".
On our way to the gate our names were called out over the PA, our gate was closing in 3 minutes.
But we got there anyway, last people onto the plane. It was very annoying, when we got to the gate and scanned our boarding passes we were assigned new seats: Since we were booked on separate tickets they didn't know we were one party so had separated us, even though I had selected seats together.
No bother though, after takeoff the woman sitting beside me agreed to swap with Tuna - Not that we spoke throughout the whole flight anyway!!

We arrived in Dublin the next morning and got a bus to Galway.

What a trip - Three weeks wasn't long enough!!

Key West May 2018 - Part 2

Day 6: Thursday 17th May

As part of our birthday present our Mom had agreed to pay for a trip out to the Dry Tortugas - On the Sea Plane! This was so exciting.
We cycled out to the airport in the morning, since we had the bikes rented from yesterday.
We didn't have to show an ID checking in which I thought was funny. We paid an extra $10 at checking which is the entry fee to the national park. The staff gave us a cooler with two bottles of water and two diet cokes also.
After receiving our boarding passes we waited outside for our pilot.

After a quick safety talk (like, 30 seconds long!) we boarded the plane. All the bags were put in the back, and every one had a window seat and a headset.

The Pilot

The takeoff was really smooth and there was absolutely no turbulence. The views from the plane were amazing. Cruising altitude was so low that we could see everything so clearly below.

We saw lots of huge sea turtles on the trip over. Unfortunately they didn't photograph well at all.

Once we arrived at the Dry Tortugas we landed on the water!!!

The first thing we did on the island was do a walk around the fort.

We then returned to the plane to take some pictures

After touring the fort for a while we then settled on the beach for a bit. It was so sunny here while it was lashing rain in Key West! We had a dip in the sea and soon it was time to return to Key West (We only had the half day trip booked).

Once we got back to Key West we had lunch in Garbo's Grill. We got the Burger and the Korean Beef Tacos to share between the two of us. We both agreed that the tacos were absolutely amazing but the burger was only average. If we went back again we'd just order the tacos.

That evening we went with Mam to the Green Parrot where Patrick and the Swayzees were playing. The place was absolutely packed! The band was so good, they play all the 60s hits :)

After this we headed over to Viva for their weekly trivia night. We came close to last but I enjoyed it. I definitely enjoy playing on a smaller team in trivia. There's no point winning if someone else on the team gives all the answers and you just sit there bored.

On the way home I picked up some General Tso's chicken from the Chinese. We can't get this as home here in Ireland, so it's always a treat to get American Chinese food!

Day 7: Friday 18th May

Finally we had a full day of glorious sunshine, the kind we expect from Key West!

I spent the day by our pool looking like this:
:)

We decided to go to Charlie Mac's for happy hour. Lydia was taking a long time to get ready so I went around to the new bar near our house: The Tipsy Rooster. The bartender was very nice, I asked if this was a new bar (since I didn't recognise it) and he said they had been open since January. He asked why I wasn't at the beach and since I said I didn't like the beach he suggested I go to the community pool. since I said I was there that morning he said "Oh, you're a local?!". Lol, I said no, but I'm sure my sister Enid would be proud, she has this obsession with trying to act like a local.

There bar is also an off license where you can buy liquor - so handy. So I said I'd be back the next day to buy some tequila and margarita mix. The margarita from Tipsy Rooster was one of the best I had this trip by the way! (I had three favourites, which I'll list in the final part of this trip report).

Lydia finally came and met me so we walked (or maybe got the Duval Loop, I can't remember) up to Charlie Mac's. We had never been in here before and wanted to try the barbecue. Happy hour is always a great way to try a restaurant without spending too much money.

Between us we ordered two Brisket sliders, two Pulled Pork sliders and the Mac&Cheese balls.

Overall the taste was fine. But really the best thing was the option to add all the different types of barbecue sauce. These were the three with the best names but there were about ten different options I think:

I had a few vodka diet cokes also, I think they were half price, or around $3 each.

At this point our sister Enid texted us to say she had arrived from the airport. She had decided at the very lat minute to come to Key West - She hadn't even told our Mom! So we waited for her to arrive, and after she arrived and had a slider and a vodka we were on our way to surprise our Mom and Aunts.

We knew they were at Alonso's so we walked in that direction, but ended up actually just running into them on the street!

You would guess that my Mom hadn't seen Enid in years the way she reacted!!!

Now that we were one big group we headed to Mallory Square for the sunset celebration.

I was so excited to see Dollar Dog! He's my absolute favourite, although he takes all my money!!

My favourite part of the act is when the dog seems to drop all the money and then the owner says "Clean up that Goddam mess!" so Dollar Dog goes around and picks up all the money from the floor!

After Mallory Square we stopped by The Bull where the Spectrelles were playing. I love this band, they're so cute and 60s! Margaritas here were BOGO during the show.

I stopped for a cheeky frozen margarita on my way home of course :)

Day 8: Saturday 19th May
Today Lydia and I were doing our watersports day with Sebago. We booked the Power Adventure tour which cost around $160 each. The boat leaves at 10am but we checked in at 9am as we had to do a test in order to get a license to operate the jetskis.
We stopped in Coffee Plantation on the way and I got a cafe con leche. Thank god we got coffee on the way - Because breakfast on the boat didn't include any coffee!

Once on board we were given our snorkel gear and once the boat was moving breakfast was served. It consisted of mini muffins and two different types of quiche.

We then arrived at the snorkelling area where we were able to jump right off the side of the boat into the water! The water was quite murky due to the recent bad weather. The captain said that normally he takes the snorkel trips to the Atlantic but it was so bad that he was taking us to the Gulf instead. Despite the bad visibility we did spot a few fish. There was very little though. Lydia and I were almost getting bored because there was so little to see when suddenly I heard Lydia squeal and point: I looked and a shark was swimming by us!!! No lie!
This is what it looked like (Not my photo!):

Image result for reef shark key west
We were both a bit shook (even though the shark ignored us!) so we got out of the water then - We had been in for quite a while anyway. When we got out the captain got annoyed at us because apparently he had specifically said in his brief that there were reef sharks and that they were harmless.

Anyway, soon after they called everyone in and we set sail again back to Key West, to the Sebago pontoon. On the way back lunch was served which consisted of cold chicken wings (bad), shrimp (Lydia said they were good), make your own sandwiches which were very good and also some pasta and potato salad. It was lovely to eat our lunch sitting on the boat in the sun with the wind in our hair :)

Once we arrived at the pontoon we were put into the first group to go parasailing. We weren't too pushed on the parasailing - We weren't even sure if it was included in the tour! - but it actually ended up being a highlight! It was exciting at the start and then peaceful. We got a great view of the water and of Key West. The boar driver dipped us into the water at one point too!

After our parasail we took paddle boards and paddled around for a while. There was a shipwreck that we paddled around which was interesting. I noticed a shoal of tiny fish which were jumping out and over the water. Suddenly Lydia shouted that the fish had all jumped onto her board!!! She didn't know what to do, ha, scared of tiny fish!. by the time I paddled over to her the fish were not moving. However, I picked them up and put them back into the ocean. Most started swimming away but some just floated. Hopefully there were ok after a few minutes...

At this point the queue for jet-skis was small so Lydia was able to go on one alone (Good, because I didn't want to it on the back of hers!). she said it was really good fun, she did loads of donuts. It's just not my thing though.

Since I wasn't going on the jet-skis I was able to have a few beers from the on-board bar. They had red wine, white wine and three beers on tap. All included in the price of the tour.

After Lydia was finished on the jet-skis we also played on an inflatable trampoline in the water. I would definitely reccomend this water sports tour and I'd do it again next time I'm in Key West. However, I wouldn't pay for the "professional" photos that are taken of you during our parasail. The asking price is $50. Since we refused to pay this he offered it to us for $40, and then $35. We agreed to pay $35 but my god, they were absolutely crap.

After our watersports tour we went to Lucy's Retired Surfer bar for Happy Hour. My drink came with a mermaid in it :) Lydia's came with a shark attack!

Day 9: Sunday 20th May
On Sundays in Key West we go to Bistro 245 for the Mimosa brunch!

We always sit outside. I don't think the brunch would be worth the money if we were sitting inside.
The views from the outdoor terrace are amazing. Some people feel that the cruise ships ruin the view, but I love seeing them come in!

On the way home I got myself a frozen margarita - This time in a refillable sports bottle seeing as I buy so many!

In the afternoon Lydia and I visited Hemingway's home. We took the free tour around the house which is always very interesting. I'm not going to lie though - We're mainly there for the polydactyl cats!

Mae West let us pet her - Which apparently is unusual, she's quite shy

We were the last to leave, and towards the end the staff were setting up for a wedding.

Afterwards we went to Mary Ellens. I wanted to try their frozen Irish coffee which I'd seen on Instagram. It didn't disappoint! We also ordered Grilled Cheese sandwhiches from their extensive grilled cheese sandwich menu. This was a really nice 'local' spot, the bartender didn't charge Lydia for her diet coke at all, he said they only charge for alcohol!

There was a trolley full of board games so we played Jenga and Connect 4. There was also a large tub full of doggie biscuits for any dogs who come for a drink!

Day 10: Monday 21st May
This was Lydia's leaving day. So we got up early and walked down to Schooner Wharf for breakfast.

In Schooner Wharf they had a poster for a Minimal Regatta happening next Sunday so I said I'd definitely go see that.

It was another rainy day in Paradise.

Enid and I went to Turtle Kraal's for Happy Hour.

The wings were great. The ribs are huge and test great also, but after a while the sauce started to make me feel sick. Drinks are BOGO so we consumed quite a few vodkas - This might have caused the nausea also!!!.

At this point the rain really started to pick up, so we ended up staying here from the start until the very end of happy hour.

After Happy Hour on week nights there are turtle races in Turtle Kraals. This was so much fun! Everyone gets a number and then if your number matches the winning turtle you get to pick a key. If the key opens the box then you win what's in the box. The night we were there a man won $500!
